TSBE on Mayor Paul Antonio’s Four Decades of Service to Toowoomba
Today, Mayor Paul Antonio has announced his resignation as the Mayor of Toowoomba Regional Council. This decision marks the end of an era, as Mayor Antonio's exceptional dedication and service to local government and his community has spanned over 40 years. Such an achievement reflects a remarkable investment of oneself in the betterment of our region.
As the Chair of Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE), John McVeigh expressed his admiration for Mayor Antonio's leadership, stating, “over 40 years of service in local government is a magnificent achievement and huge investment of self. I have seen Paul lead this community through good and bad, and the Mayor has stood with the community to lead and support as a fierce champion and promoter of the Toowoomba region.”
At this moment, our TSBE takes the opportunity to acknowledge Mayor Antonio's invaluable contribution in the establishment of TSBE more than a decade ago. His ongoing support has been instrumental in advocating for the prosperity of Toowoomba. Greg Bowden, CEO of TSBE, expressed gratitude, saying, "We recognise the strength and unwavering support of Paul Antonio in setting up TSBE and his continued efforts to foster advocacy efforts for the economic growth and prosperity of Toowoomba."
One of Mayor Antonio's notable legacies for the region will be his involvement with the South East Queensland Council of Mayors (SEQ), which played a crucial role in Brisbane successfully securing the 2032 Olympics and TSBE will continue to work with council and COMSEQ on our 2032 Legacy opportunities. His approach in collaboration with the private sector has transformed the Wellcamp and Charlton areas into thriving industrial developments. These endeavours hold the key to an industrial and connected future for the region.
The term "regional advocacy" is often used loosely, but true regional advocacy occurs when the private sector, all levels of government, and the public work together to promote and champion the places we call home. TSBE look forward to continuing to work together with Toowoomba Regional Council in advocating for our region.
Greg Bowden concludes, “as an organisation and as a region, we consider ourselves fortunate to have had the unwavering support and commitment of a civic leader like Paul Antonio”.
Paul Antonio’s last day as Mayor or Toowoomba Regional Council will be 21 July 2023.
