Western Downs Council $50m recovery package warmly welcomed
Up to 1,000 jobs are expected to be created and relief for residents and business owners, thanks to a major stimulus package unveiled by the Western Downs Regional Council.
The COVID-19 Recovery Package announced today will secure and create jobs, energise the economy, and support the region through the COVID-19 health crisis.
Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise CEO, Ali Davenport, said the $50 million Recovery Package is nothing short of awe inspiring.
“I applaud the Western Downs Regional Council for today’s announcement but more importantly for all the hard work they have undertaken previously to provide money in the war chest to face this crisis.”
“Over a four-year period from 2015, the Council made a decision to cut expenditure by $10.4 million and condensed loans, and in March 2019 they became one of the very few Councils in Queensland who are debt free.”
“This has led to today’s $50m announcement which is so significant I doubt whether any Council in Australia would be able match it for per capita spend to support the community through the COVID-19,” said Ms Davenport.
The package includes targeted rates, fees and charges relief for businesses and residents, as well as more than $45 million to accelerate infrastructure and major projects, including the development and delivery of 11 major projects for prominent regional locations.
“The package will not only create 1,000 new jobs, but also a lifeline for all in the community who are or will be impacted by the economic downturn.”
“It’s another example of this Council’s sound financial management in the good times which has led them to be in a position to help the community and spend money when it is needed the most.”
“Whilst all who work for the Western Downs Regional Council should feel proud of this achievement, I would like to highlight Mayor Paul McVeigh, all Councillors including Councillor Ian Rasmussen (spokesman for Finance and Corporate Services) as well as Council CEO Ross Musgrove for providing the leadership and direction to achieve the financial position that has led to today’s announcement.”
“I hope all who live in the Western Downs understand that you are in good hands with this Council.”
“They have spent your ratepayer money wisely in the past and are willing and able to help you now that times are tough and the future is uncertain,” said Ms Davenport.
