Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise, in partnership with Meat and Livestock Australia, were thrilled to deliver the Darling Downs Beef Mates initiative as part of the Queensland Government’s Food and Fibre to Market (FF2M) – Industry Partnerships Program.
As part of the program, we made welcome seven international chefs to our region who all shared their insider knowledge about the red meat landscape in the US. Local red meat producers were invited to expand their network and gain understanding of similarities and differences between Australia and the US at a meat and greet.
Darling Downs beef took centre stage over a week as the international chefs converged on Toowoomba as part of the Darling Downs Beef Mates delegation last year (2023). The delegation were immersed in the Darling Downs beef industry from paddock-to-plate. The jam-packed week saw the Beef Mates visit farms, processing plants and restaurants in the state’s beef capital region. They also participated in a beef masterclass where they explored topics including butchery, Meat Standards Australia, food safety and integrity systems.
Throughout the week, the Aussie Beef Mates shared their ideas on innovative beef uses and networked with stakeholders within the supply chain. Importantly, they also learn't from each other as they created beef dishes inspired by regional flavours.
