Based at the Wellcamp Business Park, Pyrocal is an Australian-owned and operated company designing and building industrial-scale gasification systems for global markets. Pyrocal’s Continuous Carbonisation Technology transforms biomass into biochar, an organic carbon-based material that has a broad range of benefits for industries including agriculture, building and construction and water filtration.

Founded in 2014, Pyrocal has invested heavily in R&D over the past decade and today has one of the most advanced systems available globally. With a full scale demonstration and R&D facility located at Wellcamp, Pyrocal is able to undertake commercial-scale trials of suitable feedstocks. 

Pyrocal’s most significant project to-date has been delivering Australia’s first biosolids gasification facility for the City of Logan, which opened in 2022. This multi award winning project resulted in operational cost savings of $1M per annum and a reduction in carbon emissions of 6,000 tonnes per annum. The success of this project has led to Pyrocal having a focus on biosolids, which is a growing issue globally due to PFAS and other contaminants. Pyrocal’s technology significantly reduces PFAS and the volume of biosolids. Further, research that Pyrocal has undertaken in collaboration with the University of Southern Queensland, demonstrates that biosolids biochar has plant available phosphorus.
