Surat Basin Energy Summit

The 2022 Surat Basin Energy Summit, based in Dalby in the Western Downs, will bring industry leaders together to explore how the Surat Basin can continue to deliver diverse energy production, ensuring economic growth for decades to come.

The ever-changing energy landscape in the Surat Basin now has a dual focus of providing reliable, low-cost energy domestically and globally whilst transitioning to meet sustainability targets. During this time of change, it’s important to ensure the Surat Basin energy sector has the- infrastructure and investment to maximise the region’s full potential to capture national and global opportunities.

The Surat Basin is currently the region in Australia with the largest amount of onshore natural gas activity and investment. The major companies involved in gas development and export include Shell’s QGC Business, APLNG/Origin Energy, Arrow Energy, Santos and Senex who each contribute hundreds of millions of dollars in investment per year into the local economy.

Coal has been a mainstay energy resource for the Western Downs for many decades. Coal is extracted from the Kogan Creek Mine which powers the Kogan Creek Power Station, one of Australia’s most efficient and technically advanced coal-fired power stations. Coal is also extracted from Yancoal’s Cameby Downs Mine, located outside Miles.

The emergence of new energy production opportunities from sources such as hydrogen plus a wide range of renewable and battery technologies support the growing demand for cheap, renewable electricity. The newly formed Southern Qld Renewable Energy zone (SQREZ), if positioned correctly, can deliver enormous growth for the Surat Basin. A summary of the SQREZ highlights the following:

• There are currently 34 large-scale renewable projects under development in the Surat Basin, with a total capacity of over 11 GW.
• This capacity represents almost 30% of all projects under development in QLD, and 7% of all projects in the National Energy Market.
• 98% of energy projects under development comes from clean energy (wind, solar, battery).

The Surat Basin Energy Summit will discuss how the current energy landscape and the future low carbon transition will create both opportunities and challenges for existing and emerging energy producers. The speakers are leaders from energy companies operting in the Surat Basin who will outline what gives them confidence to continue to invest in the region, discuss the challenges they face in the changing energy landscape and talk about their goals for the future.
