V-Max theatre construction continues at Grand Central

Despite tough conditions, construction has been able to continue throughout Toowoomba, creating a pipeline of jobs.

One of those projects has been the new V-Max theatre at Grand Central, with Hutchinson Builders utilising local content supply chains, trade people and adapting to the COVID-19 restrictions, with the support of QIC.

Project Team Leader from Hutchinson Builders, Sean Lees, said the project is moving forward at a positive rate, even with adaptions needing to be put in place.

“The project is currently right on schedule despite what is a very interesting time. At this stage we have been able to mitigate the potential impact of COVID-19 and are able to continue construction.”

“Toowoomba is fairly uniquely situated to deal with these sorts of issues because we have such a balanced economy,” said Mr Lees.

Project Manager from Specialised Property Consulting, Gordon Grover, said the team has been able to adapt to ensure restrictions are met, and that he is glad the Toowoomba pipeline of construction work is continuing, despite conditions.

“We’ve adapted by using Zoom and Microsoft Teams to conduct project team meetings as well as a time lapse camera mounted on site so that we can look at construction without attending site.”

“I haven’t experienced any impacts and have even had requests for new projects, it seems like there is a lot of support to keep the construction industry going,” said Mr Grover.

TSBE Energy and Infrastructure General Manager, Lance MacManus, said this project, along with many others outlined in the TSBE Development Status Report, provide a pipeline of $13.1 billion in development projects, highlighting how economic progress and development are playing a vital role during this difficult period.

“Toowoomba has a promising development pipeline which is consistent with long-term sustainable growth, stimulating the local economy,” said Mr MacManus.

Grand Central Centre Manager Claire Torkington said a new V-Max theatre will be built at Grand Central this year.

“The cinema expansion will occur on part of the western rooftop car park, adjacent to Margaret Street.”

“It will increase the floor space of the cinema by more than 1,100m2 and will be delivered alongside a refurbishment for the existing cinemas.”

“The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year,” said Ms Torkington.

Ms Torkington said Hutchinson Builders started construction of the new theatre recently, and a tower crane has been installed to enable ease of materials handling.
